These fruit acids are almost always found in the top skincare ingredients for oil and acne control, resurfacing, and lightening. They are found in cleansers, masks, toners, serums, and creams.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) are water-soluble and remain on the surface of the skin. They are very good for breaking the bonds in between dead skin cells, making it easier to sweep them off from the topmost layer.

They are also a fan favorite when it comes to reducing signs of skin damage caused by UV exposure (e.g. fine lines and sunspots).

AHAs include:

  • Glycolic acid
  • Lactic acid
  • Mandelic acid
  • Malic acid
  • Tartaric acid

Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) are oil-soluble which means they can go deeper and penetrate oil. This is why it is often given to those who experience frequent breakouts and suffer from really oily skin. Salicylic acid is the most widely used beta hydroxy acid that can be used for the skin.

What is the Difference Between AHAs and BHAs? And How Do You Use Them?If you have any of these two in your skincare, protect your skin with sunscreen every morning. And discontinue acids at least 3 days before you proceed with a laser treatment or chemical peel to prevent complications.

If you are a newbie, start with the lowest dose you can find and use it every other night for 2 first weeks. Once your skin has adjusted, you can use it every night.
