Serum is a skincare product you can apply to your skin after cleansing but before moisturizing with the intent of delivering powerful ingredients directly into the skin. The main reason why it’s so effective is because it contains the most potent doses of active ingredients like antioxidants, peptides, and skin brighteners such as kojic acid. Serums tend to have a light texture and can be easily absorbed; hence penetrating the skin’s deepest layers and producing visible effects in less time. Their main goal is not to replace the moisturizer; but to complement them.
How should I apply a Serum?
Always use them after you clean your face; in your skincare routine, you should include it before the moisturizer. This will allow the active ingredients to penetrate. You only need a couple of drops to treat your concern. Do not apply it directly into your skin; put the drops on your hand and extend it on the affected area with circular movements. Also, you can do upwards and go from the center out.
What type of Serums can I use?
Everything depends on your type of skin and specific concerns. Each serum contains different ingredients based on their function.
- Pigmentation and Antioxidant: Ascorbic acid, also known as Vitamin C, is the most common serum used to treat pigmentation and luminosity in the face.
- Anti-aging and Hydration: The main ingredient is Hyaluronic Acid, which is an element that can attract water into our skin and combats dryness and fine lines.
- Oiliness: Non-comedogenic ingredients like Salicylic Acid are recommended; they reduce the pore size, exfoliate the skin, and prevents acne.
Can everybody use them?
Yes, everybody can use them at any age as long as you are using the right serum for your skin; if you have sensitive skin be careful when choosing your serum and active ingredients.
A word of caution: Because serums are super potent, more is not always better. Be careful before piling it on. Powerful ingredients can irritate sensitive skin. Always patch-test accordingly.
