What are these dark spots I see on my face? All you need to know about Melasma

Melasma is a pathological skin condition that shows hyperpigmentation that can be noticed mostly in the face. It is mostly found in women during pregnancy and is caused by the excessive and irregular distribution of melanin. 

Some important facts about Melasma:

  • The chances of going away completely are low; they can show an amazing improvement; however, they won’t disappear completely.
  • It is not exclusive to pregnancy.
  • Prolonged sun exposure and blue light exposure increase the chances of hyperpigmentation.
  • It is not related to liver diseases.
  • However, it is not exclusive for women; it can also be present in men in a lower proportion.
  • It can be hereditary.
  • On occasions, homemade treatments can worsen the Melasma. 

How is Melasma treated?

  • Hydroquinone: It is the main treatment used to even the skin tone and should be prescribed by a professional. 
  • Tretinoin: Derived from Vitamin A, it can treat pigmentation, acne and can exfoliate and increase the production of new collagen and elastin. 
  • Chemical peelings: They can remove the superficial skin layer, removing pigmentation and uneven skin tone. 
  • Microdermabrasion: It is a treatment where a mechanical exfoliation is made with a diamond tip. It will not only leave your skin softer but also help you with fine lines and pigmentation.
