Key Difference between Hyperpigmentation and Melasma

Both hyperpigmentation and melasma are so common that it becomes hard to differentiate between them. But it has to be identified because the treatment approach is different. Let’s find out a key difference between both of them.  

Key Difference between Hyperpigmentation and Melasma

Hyperpigmentation is a broad term that includes any skin condition that results in a darker patch of skin than its surroundings. It can be blemishes, spots, freckles, melasma, or discoloration. It can be due to certain medications or scarring but the main cause is sun exposure. It has no health effects, just topical skin issues. But it is easily treatable with topical creams such as those bearing vitamin C.

Melasma is a stubborn skin condition that is actually a type of hyperpigmentation. It also results in dark patches, particularly on the cheeks, chin, upper lips, forehead, etc. Although the sun plays an important role, the main culprit is hormones. That’s why it is quite common for pregnant women. It is very difficult to treat because topical treatment alone doesn’t work. Also, the response rate varies among different females. 

Key Difference between Hyperpigmentation and Melasma    Both melasma and hyperpigmentation can be discomforting, particularly for cosmetic issues. It can affect one’s confidence and self-esteem. To treat them successfully, one has to know if it’s melasma or hyperpigmentation.
