What are Ceramides?

You may see this term everywhere, but do you know what Ceramides are? Ceramides are lipids (fat) found naturally in the skin, essential in strengthening the skin barrier. They prevent water loss and keeps skin moisture. Ceramide, together with collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid drop with age; hence, the older you are, the lesser quantity of these elements you have. The lack of ceramides doesn’t allow the skin to maintain moisture and hydration; therefore, skin tends to become dry with visible signs like redness, irritation, and even wrinkles.

Benefits of Ceramides for your Skin

  • Repair the skin barrier occupying the spaces between cells, acting like cement, keeping it together.
  • It keeps the skin hydrated and healthier
  • Prevents irritation, acne, redness
  • They limit the UV penetration into your skin, together with factors related to pollution.
  • Regulate sebum production.
  • Prevents infection caused by bacteria
  • Prevents eczema and atopic dermatitis by maintaining the skin’s balance.

  • Restores softness and shine, making the hair feel softer.

You don’t need to add ceramides as part of your daily hair care; by using it just once per week, you will still be able to see some results.

How do we lose this element?

  • Aging causes loss of collagen, elastin, and ceramides.
  • Strong cleansers affect ceramide levels and lipids, causing dryness.
  • Cholesterol medication.
  • Diet where fatty acids are not included.

Where can we find it?

Natural oils are the best source of ceramides; when buying a new product, look for the following oils: jojoba, safflower, poppy seed, grape seed, corn, sesame, argan, peanut, almond, olive, coconut, and others.
