Should vitiligo be treated in kids?
As reports say outcomes in children is much better than in adults. That’s why in kids it’s recommended to start therapy because they have higher chances to stop the disease from spreading and to recover.
Treatment:
Corticosteroid creams
Corticosteroids can help to return the pigment to the skin especially in the early stage of the disease. It reduces the inflammation which is the reason for the loss of pigment.
Calcineurin inhibitors (Tacrolimus)
Topical calcineurin inhibitors such as tacrolimus works well against vitiligo. It can be applied on the face. This drug inhibits autoimmunity associated with vitiligo and it also promotes melanocyte induction.
Narrowband UV-B (NB-UVB)
UVB is widely used and it’s the most common phototherapy choice for the treatment of vitiligo. Wavelengths of 311-312 nm are usually used. UVB is safe to use in kids and pregnant women.
If your child is diagnosed with vitiligo, it’s very important to wear sunscreen to protect the skin against burns, scars and skin cancer. Plus vitiligo spots can’t get tan, so if your child gets on the rest of their body, it will only highlight the white spots.
