Ceramides are often recommended by dermatologists or online skincare guides for skin irritation. You must have read it in the ingredient list of your moisturizer. Let’s get to know about it in detail.

Ceramides are long-chain fatty acids that are naturally present in our skin. In fact, they make up 50% of our epidermis. Ceramides are a vital part of our skin barrier. They prevent skin from external damages. They are also responsible for locking the moisture inside our skin to keep our skin hydrated. They also act as anti-aging as they decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
The problem starts with the older age; our skin’s ceramide level starts to decrease. This can result in dry and irritated skin. Those who have eczema and psoriasis also suffer from low ceramides in the skin. In such conditions, we need to supplement our natural ceramide levels with the external application of skincare products containing ceramides. There are many skin care products available containing ceramides.

Ceramides are present in many skin care products such as creams, ointments, lotions and cleansers. When choosing a product containing ceramides, prefer a product with opaque and airtight packaging because if it is not packed correctly, it will lose its effectiveness over time.
