The Truth about Calendula and Why It Is Under-Rated

This vibrant-looking flower, called Calendula or “little calendar”, was used as a wound dressing in the American Civil War and World War I, which then evolved to be a supportive treatment in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine for soothing wounds, relieving allergies, and controlling skin infections.

Apparently, this orange-gold flower blooms with a variety of skin benefits.

Sun Protection

5% calendula oil cream was found to be effective in protecting the skin from UVB, preventing the development of burn and redness secondary to sun exposure.

Although there aren’t a lot of studies that support this claim but there are those who swear by it and continue to use this flower for its sun protection activity.

Acne, Eczema, and Psoriasis

Calendula contains rutine, quercetin, apigenin, luteolin, kaempferol, and vitexin which all provide pharmacological properties that are anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and anti-viral, making it a good remedy for acne, eczema, and psoriasis.

However, more studies are needed to confirm its effectiveness as a stand-alone treatment.

Skin Aging

Calendula is known for its flavonoids and fatty acids, which is why this pot marigold is a good remedy for free radicals and an awesome moisturizer. It can reduce the signs of aging and make your skin tighter and plumper.

Subjects from one study reported visible improvements in skin damage caused by UV exposure after applying 10% and 15% calendula extract cream for 2 weeks.
