Effects of Midnight Snacking on Skin Aging

After a long tiring day, who doesn’t like to plop themselves down on the couch with a late-night bag of chips?

It’s comforting and effortless, I know.

I hate to cut it to you. Not only it makes you fat and takes you closer to age-related diseases, but it also takes a toll on your skin.

The first danger comes from the high glycemic index foods that you eat such as chips, chocolates, and ice cream. Such foods encourage general inflammation in your body which eventually contributes to skin aging and acne problems. Snacking

The second danger comes from the disruption of your circadian rhythm. When you eat within an hour of your bedtime, it messes up your body clock. This weakens your natural defense system  and makes your skin more vulnerable to UV rays that are supposedly high during the day. When this happens, you become more prone to skin aging caused by UV exposure.

So what are your better options for your hunger pangs late at night? Snacking

First, drink a glass of water. Sometimes, your hunger is just a sign of dehydration. Quench that thirst and wait if your stomach still growls for food. If the feeling persists, this is the time you can start raiding your kitchen or pantry.

Here are a few examples that you can munch on at night without feeling guilty the morning after:

  • Almonds, Pumpkin Seeds, and Walnuts.
  • Fruits.
  • Low-fat Greek Yogurt.
  • Oatmeal.
  • Eggs.
