Furfuryl Palmitate: A Novel Antioxidant for Red and Itchy Skin

There’s this new antioxidant, called Furfuryl Palmitate. It is non-pharmacologic which is used as a Prescription Emollient Device (PED) for skin allergies. It is a great alternative for those who are suffering from mild to moderate Atopic Dermatitis and other skin problems such as Irritant and Contact Dermatitis, Seborrheic Dermatitis, and who want to steer clear of steroids.

What’s more promising about it?

The first reason is that it’s not pharmacologic. This means if you’re uncomfortable with long-term maintenance drugs or are uncertain about their side effects, this might be a better option for you. This also goes for mothers who want a more natural approach for their kids.

The second reason is it’s an antioxidant with a strong single oxygen quenching ability.  It only relieves the itchiness and redness but also protects your skin from free radicals and UV radiation.

Furfuryl palmitate is now found in topicals such as Relife Relizema and Bionike Triderm Lenil+. If you think you need one, get in touch with your dermatologist so that he or she can prescribe you one according to your skin type.

So far, this antioxidant has been getting positive feedback. If this continues, it has the potential of going mainstream and encouraging more research to see how this can be used for other skin concerns such as anti-aging.
