Vitamin D is important because it helps our body absorb calcium that is needed to keep our bones and muscles strong. Vitamin D Deficiency
The primary source of vitamin D is the UV rays from the sun. When UVB rays hit the skin, it converts a protein into a more active form of vitamin D.
There are some who claim that wearing sunscreen on a daily basis increases your risk for vitamin D deficiency.
Is there any truth to this?
No.
There is no adequate evidence to support this claim. In fact, there are a number of those who are residing in Britain who are vitamin D deficient with or without the daily application of sunscreen.
A study done in Australia has also shown that there is no difference between the vitamin D levels between a group that applied sunscreen daily and a group that applied a placebo.
Other factors are needed to significantly lower vitamin D absorption in the body. These are your place of residence, an existing health condition that intervenes with vitamin D absorption, obesity, skin color, and intake of particular medicines.
If you think you lack sun exposure, you can always add sources of vitamin D to your diet such as fatty fish and fortified foods. Oral supplementation is also helpful if food sources are difficult to acquire.
