In contrast to other medical problems that are not apparent to others, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, people with skin conditions bear their disease for the world to see, so the psychological and social burden of living with a skin illness can be severe and debilitating.
Many skin conditions, including acne, rosacea, psoriasis, eczema, and hair loss, have been linked to higher rates of anxiety, sadness, and a lower quality of life. This is a sign that skin diseases are not just superficial and we should treat people who are struggling with more seriousness and delicacy.

How does stress affect skin conditions?
When we experience stressful situations, our body produces stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol, which can in turn affect how well our immune system is able to control inflammation.
Simply put, we all know that in most skin conditions inflammation is the key factor that initiates or stimulates the process and if that is not controlled in the right way because of stress, the outcome is not favorable.
What is crucial for us to understand is that this is a vicious cycle where your skin condition causes you stress that comes from social circles and stigma, meanwhile that stress affects you by exacerbating that skin condition.

There are a lot of ways to deal with stress and also a lot of ways to take care of your skin but always know that getting the right information is one of the most important steps to a successful result.
If you are suffering, please don’t wait; reach out to a dermatologist or a psychologist close to you to discuss options. There are many. It just might change your life.
Keep in mind that you are not alone and your skin condition doesn’t define you!
