Cold Sores is an infection caused by the Herpes Simplex Virus that produces repeated episodes of small, painful, fluid-filled blisters on the skin, mouth, lips (cold sores), eyes, and even genitals.
How can I get cold sores?
It is a highly contagious infection that can be transmitted by direct contact with the cold sores or sometimes with an affected area when there is no ulceration. It is more contagious when you are in contact with a blister and its fluids.
What are the symptoms?
Herpes can cause blisters or ulcers in the mouth or on the genitals. Often with the first infection, you may develop a fever, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, and headache. Several days after the blisters break, a scab is formed, but it doesn’t leave a scar.
It is also possible that you are infected with the virus but never show any signs or symptoms described previously.
Is there a cure for cold sores?
There is no definitive cure, they go away by themselves, but on occasion, treatments are recommended. Antiviral pills or topical treatment is indicated to increase the healing process. Besides that, they may reduce the severity of the next outbreaks.
