Another skincare hack has gone viral on TikTok. This time it’s about using banana peels to target dark circles under the eyes, wrinkles, and pigmentation.
How does this TikTok banana trick go?
According to Terri Mlotek (the origin of this hack), all you have to do is to scrape out the white fibers from the inside of the peel and mix them up with aloevera or whatever moisturizer you have on hand. Once mixed, gently tap the mixture under your eyes and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes before washing it off. She says that doing it 2 to 3 times a week is the recommended frequency.
What’s the science behind this?
When there is too much salt (sodium), our body absorbs too much water which eventually manifests in puffy and dark circles under eyes.
Potassium, on the other hand, helps balance this out. And since bananas contain potassium, it is believed that it can counter eyes puffiness and dark circles.
So, does it work?
The penetration and absorption are still not convincing. It will work only up to a certain degree if done frequently. But the results remain minimal because the skin cannot fully absorb the minerals/vitamins from the banana.
(This is why skincare products are formulated in such a way that the ingredients can be easily absorbed by the skin.)
However, if you want to give it a try, go ahead and have fun with it since you have nothing to lose.
