What are silicones?
Silicones are normally found in hair products to smoothen and lessen the frizziness of the hair.
They practically coat your hair strands to hydrate and lock in moisture, and they protect your hair from damage whenever you use heat-styling devices such as blow dryers and hair irons.
So, why are they labeled as “bad”?
They aren’t completely “bad”.
Using silicones is pretty much safe but using them every day for a long period can accumulate in your scalp and clog your pores.
This build-up in your pores can create inflammation in your scalp causing redness, itchiness, and flakiness. A long-term effect can lead to dryness and hair breakage.
Plus, the build-up is quite hard to remove.
What do you need to know?
Do know that there are three kinds: water-soluble, non-soluble, and evaporating.
Soluble ones are intended to soften and condition strands whereas non-soluble ones protect the hair from heat.
While non-soluble ones are good for protecting your hair shaft, they can also keep your hair from absorbing favorable ingredients from other products.
Plus, they are much harder to wash off which leads to an easier accumulation of oil and dirt.
So, if you want to take the safer route, perhaps go for soluble silicone. It is labeled with PEG attached to their names whereas, non-soluble ones end with “-one”.
