What is hyaluronic acid and why is it so popular?

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is naturally found in our skin, eyes, and connective tissues to provide moisture and elasticity in these areas.

What’s so good about it?

It might be a simple molecule but it does serve a lot of functions in the body.

Joints and Bones

Hyaluronic acid was first introduced as a treatment for people who were suffering from osteoarthritis. It is injected to lubricate joints in order to reduce friction between bones that can cause pain.

It is also being taken orally to prolong the effects of the injections and to lengthen the interval between treatments.

Eyes

Hyaluronic Acid is also used to retain moisture in the eyes. This is why eye drops that contain 0.2 to 0.4% HA have been useful in relieving dry eyes.

Skin

There’s a reason why HA is popular in skincare

Although its function is to simply retain moisture, it does provide a lot of benefits not only for connective tissues and eyes but also for our skin.

By keeping our skin hydrated, we can delay signs of aging and protect our skin from the usual effects of UV radiation, pollution, and toxins.

By simply applying HA on a regular basis, we can slow down the appearance of wrinkles and keep our skin supple.
