What Causes Dark Inner Thighs and How Can You Lighten It?

There are several factors that contribute to dark inner thighs. And a good start to treating hyperpigmentation is by figuring out which among these factors is causing it.

Hormonal Imbalance:

Are you pregnant, lactating, menstruating, or have been diagnosed with PCOS?

Obesity and Insulin Resistance:  Dark Inner Thighs

Are you diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus? Or have you been told by your doctor that you have Acanthosis Nigricans?

Drugs and supplements:

Are you taking medicines (e.g. oral contraceptive pills, steroids, and chemotherapy) that might have triggered the hyperpigmentation?

Physical Damage:

Rule out chafing, tight clothing, and dry skin.

If you think any of the first 3 factors play a role, discuss your concern and options with your physician first. And if you think it’s mostly due to physical damage, eliminate tight clothing or maybe start to lose some inches to lessen chafing.

After which, you can now start with at-home treatments:

Exfoliate Dark Inner Thighs

Gently exfoliate the area twice weekly to remove dead skin cells that are contributing to the discoloration. You can do this by either using granules from scrubs (like a sugar scrub) or a low-dose chemical exfoliator like glycolic acid.

Treat and Moisturize

After exfoliating, your skin can now absorb more of your moisturizer with the dead skin cells out of the way.

Apply mild lightening agents once daily (preferably at night) like niacinamide, alpha arbutin, licorice, or kojic acid with moisturizing ingredients such as shea butter, glycerin, and ceramides.
