Hydrator vs Moisturizer: Which One Do You Need?

I wish drinking water was enough to keep a plump and supple skin. Perhaps, for some, this would work. But for a majority, we would have to take a tiny bit of steps just to make sure that our skin gets an adequate amount of water to function properly.

But how do you know which one you need, a hydrator, moisturizer, or both?

Scenario #1:

If you notice visible dryness, flaking, and some sensitivity, most probably your skin’s protective barrier is not strong enough to lock in moisture.

This means you might need a moisturizer to help your skin seal in moisturizer to reduce transepidermal water loss.

You should be looking at ceramides, petrolatum, and squalene.

Scenario #2:

If you feel like your skin is dull with wrinkles coming out here and there, your skin cells might be thirsty for water. And the answer to this is a hydrator.

A hydrator will attract water into your skin cells from the surrounding environment. The most popular hydrators are hyaluronic acid, glycerin, aloe, propylene glycol, and alpha/polyhydroxy acids.

Scenario #3:

If you are both dry and dehydrated, you might want to add both a hydrating and moisturizing ingredient to your skincare for fresher-looking skin.

Apply the hydrator first and then seal it in with a moisturizer on top.
