Sand Fleas: What Are They and What Can You Do About It

What are sand fleas?

Sand fleas, sometimes called sand mites, are most often misunderstood because of their name. But actually, they are crustaceans.

They like to live in the water, making them pests of marine animals.

What do sand flea bites look like?

They are red raised bumps usually occurring in the ankle and feet. They can be really bothersome and some can even turn into blisters filled with fluid inside.

How can you treat the bites?

  1. Wash the bitten areas with cool water. Not only will it clean the area, but it will also help in relieving the itchiness.
  2. Pat dry with a cold towel to add more cooling effect on the bites. Cold temperature itself can help reduce inflammation.
  3. Apply anti-itch or anti-inflammatory creams or lotions to prevent further scratching of the lesions. Scratching promotes more redness and itchiness, which will delay healing.
  4. If the inflammation persists, take antihistamines to provide more comfort and to boost up the anti-inflammatory effect.
  5. If still not enough, consult with your physician for possible steroid medications.
