Over-the-Counter Skin Care Products for Acne

Because of the sudden change in our lives during the pandemic, it is no surprise that a lot of us are stressed which triggers health conditions, anxiety, allergies, food intolerances, and… breakouts.

Since people can’t go out of their homes in fear of catching the virus, people have to resort to over-the-counter skin care products and do their own research on what could tame down their unexpected breakouts. Of course, it’s still best to see your doctor for treatment.

But if something like the pandemic happens and you have no choice, there are OTC skin care products that can help lessen your acne. But make sure to give your doctor a call first before diving in.

So, here are the over-the-counter products I have found to be very helpful to people, including my patients, who have had really bad acne breakouts.

#1 The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%

Niacinamide is not only a good ingredient for post-acne marks and other skin blemishes, but it also regulates sebum production and reduces the inflammation in acne. Boosted with zinc, the anti-inflammatory action is made stronger.

#2 Differin Gel (Although not OTC in some countries)

It contains Adapalene 0.1% which is a retinoid. It speeds up the turnover of cells so that dead skin cells are replaced with fresher ones and dirt clogged in your pores are pushed out.

#3 Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant

It is called a cult favorite for a reason. Its content is simple but can do a lot of things. It contains salicylic acid, which reduces oil and helps shed off old skin cells. It can also help even out your skin tone.
