How to prevent ingrown hairs

Most people that have shaved or waxed at least once in their life have had the chance of experiencing ingrown hairs. Even if they look swollen and, on some occasions, can be painful, they are not more than hairs that get stuck under the skin and cannot go to the surface, and this is completely normal.

When we forcefully pull hairs out or shave them, the follicles can become irritated, to the point that as the hair grows back; it grows into the skin instead of out of the hair follicle. In other words, having some ingrown hair, as a result, is just part of the process.

Can they be prevented and treated?

Yes, they can be prevented and treated. The best way to prevent them is to avoid shaving or waxing. One of the most recommended treatments is definitive hair removal treatments like laser or IPL.

If you already have ingrown hairs and there isn’t much inflammation (just a little irritation), an ingrown hair cream might work. However, if there is already a lot of irritation, these ingrown hairs may need intervention. Any trained professional should be able to remove them without any problem.

One area with more complaints is the underarms. For this area, you can use a moisturizer before waxing, and deodorants containing acids can also be helpful or exfoliating that area might work.
