How to Deal with Ingrown Toenails?

An ingrown toenail is a painful condition due to nail growth into the skin. It not only causes pain but also affects your walk and gait. Let’s discuss some remedies for preventing and dealing with ingrown toenails.

How to Deal with Ingrown Toenails?

An ingrown toenail develops due to incorrectly cut nails, too tight footwear, or poor posture. This makes the nail grow directly into the skin that causes pain and inflammation. If left unaddressed, it can lead to infection. This condition is more common in people with sweaty feet or athletic routines. If you are starting to develop toenail and it is not infected yet, you can opt for the following tips:

  • Dip your feet in warm water for a few minutes.
  • Manually push your skin away from the nail using a cotton ball. But make sure you don’t go too hard to worsen the situation.
  • Apply any oil such as olive oil.
  • Keep your shoes as well as your feet dry.
  • If it is too painful, you can take OTC pain relievers.
  • Make sure you don’t wear tight shoes.

However, if you have already developed an infection, the best option is to seek medical assistance. Your doctor will prescribe you some antibiotics as well as painkillers. The doctor might also need to remove some part of the toenail and surrounding tissue.
