How do I know If I have skin cancer?

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancer worldwide. One of the main reasons is the lack of knowledge to recognize a pre-cancerous lesion; that is why we will go through some skin changes that you must pay attention to avoid reaching the cancerous skin lesions. Another reason for not recognizing these lesions on time is skipping a routine consultation with a dermatologist each year; with a complete skin evaluation each year, you can identify and treat those pre-cancerous moles.

Excessive sun exposure, lack of use of SPF, family history of melanoma, skin type, use of tanning beds, and repetitive sunburns throughout your life can increase melanoma chances.

The easiest way to recognize a melanoma is known as the ABCDE:
  • A: Asymmetry. Every benign mole should be symmetrical; having an irregular, asymmetrical shape must be considered suspicious.
  • B: Border. Notched borders are a clear sign of melanoma. If you notice the mole pigment extends over the skin, consider it as a sign of melanoma.
  • C: Color. Pay attention to dark colors like black, dark, and light browns. Having more than one color can be a sign of melanoma.
  • D: Diameter. Any skin lesion over 6mm is considered suspicious.
  • E: Evolution. If you notice any change in the overall look of the mole through the years.
