Do Hair Dyes Damage Your Hair?

Dyeing your hair is very trending lately. In 2021, these are not just to cover up your grey strands; it is usually for giving your locks a new aesthetic colour. But if you wonder how damaging it is for your hair in the long run, then keep reading to know if it’s true or just a myth.

The primary goal of hair dyes is to stain a new color on your hair. It involves bleaching your hair to remove the existing color and then giving it a new shade. But unfortunately, this happens by breaching the natural barriers. Yes, your natural protection for your hair is compromised to achieve the goal of fresh color.

The cuticle on our hair shaft is the first defence of our hair protection. Hair dyes are supposed to open the cuticle and then deposit the new colour underneath it. This is done by ammonia. But if you are opting for ammonia-free dyes, there is still a risk as it contains monoethanolamine which has the same function.

During bleaching, hydrogen peroxide is used to remove the existing colour. It not only goes behind the melanin but also interacts with keratin, which is again damaging for your hair.

Regular use of hair dyes is not likely to make your hair fall. These dyes make them weak, brittle and prone to breakage as your hair becomes damaged and fragile.
