The appearance of white patches on the skin in Vitiligo is caused by the destruction of Melanocytes, being these cells are the ones in charge of pigmentation of your skin, eyes, and hair. These patches can have different sizes and locations and can be localized or spread all over the body.

How are the skin lesions in Vitiligo?
In Vitiligo, you will find white patches with delimited edges; some patches can show redness surrounding them. The skin is affected, and hair can change color, turning white only in the affected areas.
What is the cause of Vitiligo?
The main hypothesis is that an auto-immune disorder causes it, but it is not completely clear. Around 40% of the patients with Vitiligo have family members with the same condition, so it is also hereditary.
What are the most affected areas?
Mainly the areas exposed to the sun, like the face, arms, hands, and feet. However, some types of Vitiligo can affect areas not exposed to sunlight, like genitals and abdominal areas.

Can Vitiligo be treated?
The main product used to treat this condition is sunscreen. Also, a treatment known as PUVA has been used to increase repigmentation in the affected area. Many treatments can improve the lesions or prevent them from growing; however, a physician must carefully examine every patient to determine the right therapy.
