What Is the Difference Between Laser and Microneedling?

Lasers make use of light energy to penetrate the skin wherea, microneedling uses tiny needles to create multiple holes in the skin. Both of these techniques induce controlled skin injury resulting in collagen synthesis.

The advantage of a laser is its adjustability of settings which helps in achieving faster results. The depth, intensity, and speed can be adjusted according to your doctor’s treatment plan.

Advantage of micro-needling is the short downtime of 1-2 days, compared to lasers that last for 3-5 days. It is also safer for darker skin types as it has less risk of burning the topmost layer of the skin which is sometimes expected from laser treatments.

If budget is not a problem, alternating these two procedures is always a good option, with laser as the main treatment and micro-needling as the adjunct.

For better results, micro-needling can be paired with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) where growth factors reside. It is these growth factors that boost healing and rejuvenation, in effect, reducing the visibility of wrinkles, scars, and stretch marks.

Also, with the confusing variety of lasers available, it would be best to consult with your doctor first to identify the most suitable laser for your skin.
