Vitamin E: How To Use Vitamin E For Skin Health?

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that acts as an antioxidant, helping protect cells from damage of free radicals throughout your body. It’s found in our sebum (skin oil that is secreted by small glands in your skin), which creates a natural barrier to keep moisture in your skin. So, oily skin surfaces like the face or the T-Zone, contain greater amounts of vitamin E. And since people with oily skin have more sebum, they also have more vitamin E on their skin.

Sebum, along with vitamin E levels, naturally declines with age. Vitamin E is also depleted by ultraviolet light (UV) sources like:

  • Sunlight.
  • Tanning beds.
  • Some fluorescent, halogen and incandescent light bulbs.

How Vitamin E works?

The research on how vitamin E benefits skin is ongoing.

Some researchers say that It probably makes moisturizers work better so using a moisturizer that contains vitamin E may produce a nice synergy to help the product work better at keeping the skin cells intact but it’s unclear in most studies if it has a direct medicinal role.

In moisturizers, vitamin E:

  1. Stops skin from losing moisture.
  2. Protects cells from damage.
  3. Softens skin.

The evidence isn’t clear-cut yet but vitamin E may also reduce sun damage by absorbing UVB rays and reducing your skin’s inflammatory response such as swelling, redness and thickening.

What you need to consider before using topical vitamin E is your skin type, if it is oily we already explained that we don’t need the same amount as someone else with dry skin because sebaceous glands are already producing enough vitamin E.

If your skin type is dry it is recommended to mix your moisturizer with vitamin E, the synergy that is created by combining those too are quite enhancing their effectiveness.
