Hydroquinone is a chemical agent used to lighten the dark area of skin. It is commonly used in skin lightening creams, lotions, and serums to treat dark patches, freckles, age spots, and melasma. Is it safe for you to choose it for treating your skin condition? Keep reading to get out of this confusion.
The U.S Food and Drug Administration said that 2% over the counter hydroquinone is safe for skin use, but it must be used cautiously. It is suggested to do a patch test before using it. If you have sensitive or dry skin, hydroquinone can cause irritation and redness on your skin. Do not use hydroquinone containing products if you are allergic to hydroquinone.
It works best if it is applied after using a glycolic acid cleanser. Always wash your hands and face before and after applying it. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen while using hydroquinone, as it can cause sunburn.
Always consult your pharmacist or dermatologist if you are using more than 2% hydroquinone. Long-term use of hydroquinone is not recommended as it can fade the skin. You can use hydroquinone containing products for 3-4 months for treating your post-inflammation marks.
