The Effects of Social Media on Beauty and Self- Esteem

Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, etc. have connected us more than ever. Whether you live in the west or the east, you now have access to someone’s whereabouts.

However, these advantages also come with disadvantages.

What is the problem?

Social media portray slim and lean to be today’s standard of beauty as shown by influencers in their bikinis and crop tops.

Facebook and Instagram Stories promote the use of selfies on a day-to-day basis increasing the need for flawless skin.

This standardization of beauty has increased pressure on social media users, especially teenagers, to achieve the same kind of body and skin. And when this standard is not achieved, psychological well-being is placed at risk.

What can you do about this?

Assess Your Feelings

Whenever, you feel like doubting yourself after viewing a post, pause and identify where your feelings are coming from.

Take Breaks

Schedule a fast every month or cut down on your daily exposure.

Studies say that the longer you are exposed to social media, the more negative your self- image becomes. Some cases even lead to depression, anxiety, and the fear of not being socially accepted.

Unfollow

If there is anyone you are following who constantly makes you feel bad about yourself, then why follow?

Instead, pay attention to posts that lift your spirits and motivate you to be a better person.
