Sunburn: What Is It and What Can You Do

What is sunburn?

Just like any other burn from extreme heat, the skin tries to heal or defend itself from potential harm through an inflammatory response. This response can be in the form of redness, swelling, itchiness, etc.

Sunburn is a skin inflammation that occurs because of prolonged UV exposure.

Sunburn: What Is It and What Can You Do

How come others burn easily while others don’t?

Melanin– the pigment responsible for the color of the skin plays a role. It protects your skin from UV rays.

The more melanin you have (the darker your skin type), the less likely your skin will burn.

This is why fairer skin types can experience more sunburn

Why would you want to protect your skin from getting a burn?

The more frequently you burn your skin, the higher your risk of skin cancer

What can you do if you get sunburn?

First, prevent the area from getting burned further. Damaging it more will slow down the healing process and might even contribute to a higher degree of burn.

Second, cool soaks can help in reducing inflammation. As well as, anti-inflammatory or analgesic medications.

Aloe-vera is a popular remedy for the relief of symptoms. However, studies say that it has not demonstrated a significant effect in terms of recovery time.
