Protect Your Hair from the Harmful Effects of Pollution

Protect Your Hair from the Harmful Effects of Pollution.Living in a busy metropolis is undoubtedly exciting and entertaining for you and your family. However, the downside to living in a concrete jungle is that the dust, smoke, grime and pollution can lead to health issues.

One of the most obvious side effects is damaged hair, with air pollution and dust particles leading to dull, lacklustre strands. The poor air quality can also aggravate sensitive scalps, causing itching and dandruff. Studies show that prolonged exposure to air pollution can even aggravate hair loss.

Here are 5 ways to help you minimise your exposure to air pollution, get rid of dirt and grime in your hair:

1. Wash your hair frequently

Shampoo daily to get rid of any dirt or pollutants that may have accumulated in your hair. Use a gentle shampoo that is suitable for frequent use so you don’t strip your strands of their natural protective oils as well. For the best results, look out for ‘clarifying’ or ‘anti-pollution’ shampoo formulas that you can use once or twice a week to deep-cleanse your hair.

2. Don’t forget your scalp

Healthy hair starts from the roots, so do not neglect your scalp when you wash your hair – use your fingertips to gently massage your scalp while shampooing. This will stimulate blood circulation, unclog pores and dislodge grime and styling products that may cause dandruff and itching.

3. Cover up

Just like your face and the rest of your body, your hair requires sun protection. Try using a leave-in hair treatment product that comes with SPF coverage to shield your strands from damaging ultra-violet rays and free radicals. Or wear a funky cap or breezy fedora to shield your hair when the sun is at its hottest. Whether you are covering up a bad hair day or making a fashion statement, you’ll still be a winner!

4. Make a cleansing hair mask

A simple DIY mask can help to cleanse your hair of dirt and pollutants, without the need for expensive, time-consuming salon treatments. Mix one part baking soda to three parts water to form a paste and massage into your hair strands. The baking soda will help dislodge grime and grease, as well as any build-up that’s formed in your hair. Wash off with warm water after three to five minutes, then shampoo and condition as per normal.

5. Avoid excessive chemical treatments

Try not to repeatedly undergo chemical treatments, such as perms, dyes and bleaching, as this will weaken your hair and cause it to be even more susceptible to damage from air pollution. Avoid using too many styling products, such as hair oils, gels or sprays, as dust and other pollutants will stick to your hair more easily.Read  More……..
