Is It True That Wet Hair Is Weak to Deal?

It is often recommended to not brush, style or treat your wet hair because they are weak. Let’s find out if this is based on truth or merely a myth.

Our hair is made up of a protein called keratin. This protein in each hair strand is covered by a protective cuticle. This cuticle is bound due to strong protein bonds. Hence, each hair strand is strong. That’s why it is said that individual hair strands can hold almost 100grams of weight. However, when our hair is wet, the protein bonds that hold the cuticle are weaker than when hair is dry. These weaker bonds make our hair more prone to damage. So it is true that wet hair is weaker than dry hair.

The combing and styling of hair involve stretching. When hair is wet, this stretching disrupts the cuticle, exposing protein which damages hair. So you need to be cautious while dealing with your wet hair.

Following are some tips for you:

  • Don’t rub your hair with a towel aggressively. Instead, blot only, focusing on roots.
  • Avoid brushing your hair yet. Use a wide-toothed comb to loosen the knots only.
  • Avoid too heated styling tools while hair is wet.
