How Is Heat Exhaustion Different From Heat stroke?

You already know about heat stroke, its signs and symptoms, and what could be the possible causes for it to occur. But heat exhaustion is different from heat stroke. Heat stroke is a serious medical condition while heat exhaustion is just a symptom but needs treatment.

Heat exhaustion occurs when there is a massive loss of water and salts from your body mainly through sweating but excess urination can also be the reason.

The general symptoms of heat exhaustion can be:

  • General weakness
  • Increased heavy sweating
  • Weak but faster heart rate
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Lightheadedness and dizziness
  • Pale and clammy skin
  • Headache

The most possible symptoms of heat stroke can be:

  • High body temperature
  • Altered mental state
  • Flushed skin
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Excess sweating
  • Rapid breathing
  • Increased heart rate

Warning:

Keep in mind that heat stroke can be much more serious than heat exhaustion and requires immediate medical attention (calling an emergency helpline can be fruitful) to prevent complications.

Treatment similarities:

The immediate first aid treatment in case of both is necessary. Follow the steps in case of emergency:

  • Move to a shaded or cool area.
  • Remove any extra layers of clothing.
  • Lie down.
  • Circulate air to speed up coiling.
  • Use a wet or cold cloth to cool the body of the patient.
