How Do Heat Protectant Products Work for Our Hair?

Heat styling is a necessary part of hair-do. But it is recommended to always use hair protectant products. Let’s understand how these products work to protect our hair.

How Do Heat Protectant Products Work for Our Hair?

When heat is applied to our hair for hair styling purposes, be it a straightener or a curler, it damages our hair, breaks down keratin, cracks the outer cuticle, and evaporates the hydration from hair. This makes hair damaged, rough, and lifeless. There are a few chemicals, such as silicones, quaternion 70, hydrolyzed wheat protein, and PVP/DMAPA acrylate copolymer, which reduce the heat damage to hair. That’s why they are commonly found in heat-protecting products.

Research says that all these ingredients create a thin film over our hair. As they are poor heat conductors, they slow down heat transfer. However, heat transfer is more even that distributes equally over the hair. Instead of sudden heating of hair, hair will now be heated gradually but gently. This allows hairstyling with less damaging hair.

It is essential to understand that applying heat protectants does not mean your hair won’t get damaged; it only reduces the extent of the damage. On the other hand, different heat-protecting products will have different efficacy based on their ingredient concentration.
