How to Deal with Scabs On the Scalp?

Having scabs on the scalp is not only annoying and painful, but it can also be embarrassing. You will have to avoid the urge to scratch them off. Let’s discuss how to deal with scabs on the scalp.  

How to Deal with Scabs On the Scalp?

Scabs can develop because of many reasons. But they are usually due to damaged scalp, resulting in platelet aggregation in the color of yellow, red, brown, or black. This scab can be very itchy, painful, and might bleed. The most common causes of scalp scab are:

  • Contact dermatitis
  • Seborrheic dermatitis
  • Scalp psoriasis
  • Scabies
  • Shingles
  • Lice
  • Scalp acne
  • Scalp picking, and many more.

How to Deal with Scabs On the Scalp?

Most commonly, scalp scab is not serious and goes away on its own. However, you can relieve the itchy symptoms by using a warm compress or applying aloe vera gel. You can also soothe your scalp by using plant-based oils such as jojoba oil, coconut oil, olive oil, etc. There are several OTC shampoos available that also help with treating scabs. They mainly contain salicylic acid or tar as an ingredient. 

Usually, the scab goes away in 7 to 14 days. However, if these home remedies do not work for you, you should see your dermatologist.
