When your doctor says you have a “damaged skin barrier”, what does it mean?
Our skin is the first line of defense against harm. And because of this, it is made up of several layers that function to filter out and guard our body against potential injury and toxins.
When these layers are compromised, these toxins can make it through our skin and create unfavorable effects, not only on our skin but also on our bodies.
Also, more water can evaporate faster from our bodies and leave our skin dehydrated.
What can damage your skin barrier?
It can be from over-washing your face, over-exfoliating, using skincare products that are too harsh on your skin, extreme temperatures, to constant exposure to air pollution.
Other possible causes can be age, smoking, and underlying diseases.
What are the symptoms?
You will notice that your skin will get dry, flaky, and itchy. Moreover, you might notice that your skin reacts faster to new skincare products.
What can you do?
First, eliminate skincare that is too harsh.
After which, make sure that you are not over-cleansing with a strong facial wash. Look for facial cleansers that will not strip out moisture from your skin.
Focus on products that contain ceramides, glycerin, niacinamide, squalene, and fatty acids.
Last but not least, protect your skin with sunscreen every day.
