Are self-tanning products bad for your skin?

Are you really into tanned skin but are afraid of sunburn?

Go for skin tanning products.

Self-tanning products can produce an artificial tan, without the need for exposure to the sun’s UV radiation. These products are made of substances that color the skin surface but if you are worried about its side effects. Then the answer is No. Self-tanning products are not harmful.

Most of them are composed of sugars such as dihydroxyacetone from sugar cane or erythrulose. The shade of tan achieved depends on the formula of each product and the amounts of these components used in the product.

The superficial layer of the skin is the only one that is stained by these products. This color change is produced when the dihydroxyacetone (DHA) comes into contact with the epidermis and creates a chemical oxidation reaction. This  ‘stains’ the dead cells of the outermost layer of our skin. With only 2% DHA, a sunless tan is achieved, but most self-tanners include 3% and 6%. The color can range from orange to brownish-brown, so it is advisable to test the self-tanner on an inconspicuous area of the skin beforehand.

Will self-tanners alter the amount of melanin?

Do you think it increases melanin levels? The answer is no!

Self-tanner does not stimulate melanin production, as it does not generate color naturally which creates protection. So, it can be considered a simple make-up. Therefore, it is essential to bear in mind that these products do not protect against solar radiation unless they contain UVA and UVB filters in their formulation. Thus the skin, despite being “tanned,” requires sun protection to avoid the harmful effects of UV radiation.
