Are Astringent and Toner the Same?

Few skin care products seem identical, considering their way of application. But they are different in their function. Let’s discuss if astringent and toner are the same or different.

Are Astringent and Toner the Same?

Toners are water-based skincare products that are applied to clean skin. They help with moisturizing and soothing skin. They often contain glycerin and similar ingredients that draw water into the skin and maintain its pH balance. Toners can also help with removing makeup.

On the other hand, astringents are alcohol-based products. Although some alcohol-free astringents are also present, the primary function is the same;  removing excess sebum from the skin. They work by shrinking the pores and decreasing the skin’s oil production. They are also applied to clean skin. But you should never overdo an astringent as they can disrupt the skin’s natural pH balance.

Toners can suit every skin type. In fact, several formulations are present that precisely target specific skin types based on particular requirements, e.g., anti-aging, skin-soothing, dark spots, etc. On the other hand, astringents are products for oily and acne-prone skin types. They prevent pore clogging and often contain antibacterial ingredients that prevent skin breakouts. They hardly suit any other skin type because they can be overly drying.
