A hand model’s top tips on how to get the perfect hands

Hand care is probably not at the top of your skincare agenda, but the skin on our hands often needs some TLC. Many say that hands are the clue to a person’s age, but there are plenty of ways to keep them soft, hydrated, and youthful.

We spoke to Brooke Colman, a hand model with Hired Hands. Her hands are her job and living, therefore it’s incredibly important to keep them in tip-top condition. Here she shares some of her skincare secrets.

1. Never cut your cuticles

This is the one thing I’d never do to my hands as the cuticles protect your nails. Cutting them not only encourages the skin to grow back quicker, but it also leaves skin underneath sore and exposed to bacteria and infection. Instead, I apply Leighton Denny Remove And Rectify Cuticle Remover (£11) for around two to three minutes and then I push them back using a metal cuticle pusher. Then, using my cuticle nippers, I only trim the dead skin that has come away from the nail.

2. Moisturise at the right time

Moisturising your hands are important, and it’s important to be aware of when they need it. I especially moisturize my hands before bed, after a bath or shower, and always after swimming. In the winter months, I carry around a small hand cream when I’m on-the-go. I particularly love Crabtree & Evelyn La Source Hand Therapy.

3. Consider what you put into your body, too

I believe that what you put into your body is more important than what you put onto your body. I drink plenty of water and have a green smoothie containing spinach, coconut oil, almond milk, banana, blueberries, Manuka honey, and Chia seeds at least three times a week.

4. Look after hangnails

I suffer quite badly with ‘hangnails,’ a hard piece of skin/cuticle that grows next to the fingernail.
