Heat Rash in Kids-Tips on What to Do

Heat rash also known as prickly heat or miliaria and usually happens during hot and humid weather. It develops when sweat glands (sweat ducts) of the skin get blocked and they can’t produce enough sweat to cool down the skin. It’s very common in infants within the first weeks of life but it can also appear in older kids and even adults.

What does it look like?

The heat rash may look like small pink or red bumps or blisters surrounded by red skin. The rash usually appears in the skin folds such as neck, armpits, elbows, groin, and also on the chest and back.

Risk factors for heat rash:

  1. Overdressing can contribute to overheating which is the main factor for heat rash.
  2. Tight clothing.
  3. Synthetic clothing. Clothes which don’t allow skin to breathe naturally.
  4. Hot and humid weather.
  5. Excessive sweating.
  6. Oil, heavy creams and ointments.   These products can block the sweat ducts because of their heavy texture.

What can you do to treat it?

  1. Dress your kid in light cotton clothing to let the skin breathe and keep it cool and dry.
  2. Use air conditioning if you live in a hot weather country to avoid overheating.
  3. Don’t wear too many layers when you dress or wrap your kid.
  4. Wash the area of the skin that usually sweat a lot and nappy area regularly.
  5. Dry your baby’s skin folds after every bath.
