What are birthmarks?
Birthmark is an area of discolored skin that is present at the time of birth or a few weeks after birth. It consists of abnormal pigment cells or blood vessels.

The cause of birthmarks is still unknown, however, they are usually harmless and do not need any treatment. Some marks go away on their own. But if you notice a birthmark on your baby skin, you should show it to your pediatrician, especially if:
- It is located on your baby’s back, along the spine. (It can be related to problems with the spinal cord)
- Big size birthmarks are located on the face or neck.
- A birthmark’s location interferes with movement. For example, on the knee or eyelid.
Birthmark types
- Pigmented: Spot that contains extra pigment.
- Vascular: Spot that contains extra blood vessels that haven’t fully developed yet.
Treatment
Most birthmarks fade away with time. However, it is advisable to get rid of these spots if it is in a bad location or if it can cause health problems.
- Propranolol. It can be prescribed for oral intake. Propranolol helps to prevent future development of hemangiomas by shrinking the blood vessels and preventing formation of new ones.
- Corticosteroids. Doctors can inject corticosteroids into some of the birthmarks, or a child can take it orally. This also helps to shrink certain birthmarks and prevent future growth.
- Laser therapy.
- Surgery. If none of the above treatments are helpful, the doctor can recommend surgery.
