Are There Any Skincare Products or Ingredients You Should Avoid in Pregnancy?

There are a lot of things that change while you are expecting. While makeup and skincare is an essential part of living, there are some ingredients that you should avoid during pregnancy. Let’s discuss them. 

Are There Any Skincare Products or Ingredients You Should Avoid in Pregnancy?

You make careful choices for what you eat and put inside your body. Certain ingredients can be absorbed from your skin into your body and hence the baby’s body too. Some of these ingredients can be harmful to the younger ones. So you should be careful about what you are putting on your skin during pregnancy. Here are some of the ingredients that are better to be avoided in pregnancy:

Retinoids:

They are commonly found in anti aging products.

Salicylic acid:

They are found in chemical peels and acne treatment products. While pregnancy increases the chance of developing acne, it is better to avoid salicylic acid-containing products.  

Hydroquinone:

Melisma is a common condition observed in pregnancy, and hydroquinone is commonly used for treating hyperpigmentation. It is better to go for other options.

Phthalates:

Phthalates, commonly present as diethyl phthalate (DEP) are endocrine-disrupting chemicals.

Chemical sunscreens:

Sunscreens, bearing oxybenzone and its derivatives are better to be avoided.

Although all makeup and skincare products are safe, some experts suggest observing cautionary measures. So it is better to avoid these ingredients to prevent any unwanted results.
