Why You Shouldn’t Apply Baking Soda On Your Skin?

Baking soda is a popular ingredient in many DIYs. But it is pretty harmful for your skin. So let’s discuss it in detail.

Why You Shouldn't Apply Baking Soda On Your Skin?

Baking soda is a chemical known as sodium bicarbonate. You can find it in many formulations used to treat stomach acidity and heartburns. This is because it has basic or alkaline nature, i.e., it has a pH higher than 7; thus, it neutralizes the acid.

Our skin has a slightly acidic pH, i.e., 5-6.5. Our skin’s structures, protective barrier and microbial flora are maintained on this pH. When a basic substance is applied to the skin, it neutralizes the acid, disrupts the pH balance, and removes the skin’s natural oils and the microbial flora. Leaving behind a susceptible and stripped skin, prone to breakout and react to stimulants.

Why You Shouldn't Apply Baking Soda On Your Skin?

It is essential to understand that anything you apply on your skin should be very close to your skin’s natural pH, i.e., slightly acidic. Apart from this, some people are susceptible to baking soda but they don’t know about it. So when they apply baking soda on their skin, they develop rash, redness, and burn.

Sometimes dermatologists use baking soda in their setting to neutralize chemical peels. But using it without an expert’s guidance isn’t safe for you.
