Why You Shouldn’t Pop Pimples

Acne is a skin condition that commonly affects areas like face and back; it can be present throughout your life but is mostly seen in teenagers. It is caused by excess oil in the skin that blocks the sebum glands causing the lesions known as Pimples; most people tend to pop them, but there is a lot of reasons why you shouldn’t pop your Pimples. We will go through some of them.

The main reason you shouldn’t do it is that, when you touch or squeeze your skin, you are breaking the protection barrier; allowing bacteria to go inside your skin. One of the most known bacteria is the Cutibacterium acnes, previously known as Propionibacterium acnes; this one is found on the pus or sebum found in the skin and can spread to other areas of the skin and increase the risk of inflammation and infection.

Another reason could be scarring. Sometimes, after you squeeze and remove the pimple, inflammation and damage to collagen fibers happen, leading to scarring. Depending on your skin type, you can also have hypertrophic or hyperpigmented scars.

So, what to do If I have Pimples?

  • Wash your face twice a day with products specifically made for acne like salicylic acid
  • While shaving, avoid areas with acne to avoid further irritation
  • Use non-comedogenic or oil-free makeup
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure
  • If you are planning to have a facial with extractions, make sure it is done by a professional and all the hygienic measures are being taken
  • Go for a consultation with a specialist where your diet, exercise habits, daily skin routine will be evaluated, and treatments like chemical peelings or LED light therapy are going to be performed according to your acne problem and skin type.
