3 Natural Lightening Alternatives to Hydroquinone That Do Not Harm the Skin

The pioneering depigmenting ingredient, Hydroquinone, used to be the only saving grace for dark spots, sun spots, and melasma. But because of its side effect of blue-black pigmentation after prolonged use, the skincare industry explored other alternatives that are just as powerful but much safer.

Kojic Acid Hydroquinone

It is produced from various kinds of fungi that work by stopping the amino acid, responsible for producing melanin which supplies color to our eyes, skin, and hair.

Since it is an acid, dryness and irritation can be noted. So it’s best to try a small amount at the back of your ear first before applying it to your face.

Cysteamine

Cysteamine is an antioxidant that is naturally produced in our body and has been found to be effective in reducing melanin in the skin after 3 to 4 months of daily application. It is  safe as almost no side effects are reported except for a little tingling sensation upon applying. Also, it is not photosensitizing. Meaning, you can continue using it even if you’re a beach lover.

Arbutin

Arbutin comes from the bearberry plant that also prevents the formation of melanin. What’s good about this ingredient is that it is friendly to sensitive skin types and can protect the skin from UV damage. It’s so gentle that if you combine it with retinol or other chemicals, you don’t have to worry about getting a burn.
