As you doze off, the energy demand to walk, talk, watch, think, etc. is put on hold which allows your body to restore itself.
This is the time our body repairs tissues and releases hormones that are necessary for growth and normal function.
When our body is deprived of sleep, our body’s normal way of restoring itself gets disrupted.
On top of this, our body undergoes stress and our cortisol levels go up which triggers inflammation in the body. This is why flare-ups of existing skin conditions can arise such as acne, psoriasis, eczema, etc.
In line with this, it can also intervene in the production of collagen disrupting the natural rate of healing and speeding up skin aging.
If you have noticed, no-sleep causes visible puffiness of the under eyes the morning after. This is because lack of sleep can lead to water retention around the eyes making them look puffy in the morning.
Also, sleep is the best time for your body to take a break from being in a vertical position (where gravity pulls down water towards your legs and feet). Lying down for at least 7 hours helps in the redistribution of water (and blood) to other areas of your body which provides more attention to your face and scalp.
