Why Do You Get Age Spots?

You must have wondered why you get age spots and if they really are age spots, then why it is also common in young people. Keep reading to answer all of your questions.  

Why Do You Get Age Spots?

Age spots are small and dark areas on your skin. They vary from light brown to dark colors. They also vary in size. These age spots are also called sun spots because they commonly occur in areas most exposed to sun, such as the face, hands, arms, back, etc. They are also called liver spots or solar lentigines.  

Why Do You Get Age Spots?

Age spots are more common in older adults, but young ones. The reason lies behind its cause. Melanin is a pigment naturally occurring in our skin that gives it color. When skin is exposed to sunlight, UV light enhances     

melanin production in high concentrations. As a result, melanin is clumped in different areas, and age spots appear. 

Why Do You Get Age Spots?

So it can be concluded that age is not the only factor to determine the age spots. So based on possible causes, the following people have a higher risk of developing age spots:

  • Older adults (generally more aged than 40 years)
  • People with fair skin
  • Those who have more sun exposure
  • Those who frequently use tanning beds

The only way to avoid age spots is to limit your sun exposure and use sunscreen.
