Perioral Dermatitis is a skin disorder where erythematous plaques appear on the lower part of the mouth and fold around the nose. This skin condition tends to be more frequent in women and children, being their skin more sensitive than men.
Excessive use of steroid creams, allergy to some foods, cosmetic creams that irritate, and fluoride toothpaste are just some of the causes of perioral dermatitis.
With the Covid-19 pandemic, we were forced to wear the mask almost 24/7, making perioral dermatitis much worse and requiring a lot of patience because the treatment could be extended.
It is a treatment that requires patience because you won’t see results right away, but this doesn’t mean it is not working. For you to see the results, you must be patient; results will take several weeks to be noticeable. In addition, it is ideal to consult a dermatologist as it is treated with medically managed medications.
What are the recommended treatments for perioral dermatitis?
- First of all, do not use more steroids
- Eliminate citrus fruits from the diet.
- Use of immunomodulating creams.
- Use of antibiotics, as long as the treating physician indicates them.
