Which Chemical Exfoliation is the Best?

We have AHA, BHA, and PHA; all of them are good for Chemical Exfoliation, it’s just that they work in different ways. The truth is, one is not better over the rest, because each one works better than the rest in some conditions.

Every skin type has it’s favorite, and here you will know which one works better according to your skin type:

Alpha-Hydroxy-Acids (AHA) for Chemical Exfoliation

  • Are recommended for normal and dry skin
  • They can be produced in the lab or be found in milk-derived or sugarcane
  • Hydro soluble
  • Improves pigmentation, have anti-inflammatory properties and remove superficial dead skin layer
  • Their molecules are smaller, so they are able to penetrate deeply into the skin
  • Can cause irritation
  • Glycolic, Lactic, and mandelic acid is the most known AHA
  • Do not combine with: Retinoids and Vitamin C

Poly-Hydroxy-Acids (PHA)

  • Recommended for sensitive skin
  • Similar to AHA, but their molecules are bigger; hence they don’t penetrate deeply into the skin
  • Are gentler than AHA
  • Has antioxidant properties
  • People with rosacea and eczema can use them without problems
  • Gluconolactone, galactose, and lactobionic acid

Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs)

  • Recommended for oily and mixed skin
  • Are suitable for skin with acne tendency
  • Has anti-inflammatory properties
  • Increase cell renewal and improves sun damage
  • Are liposoluble, so they can penetrate the pores and dissolve sebum preventing clogging
  • Salicylic acid, betaine salicylate, sodium salicylate and willow bark extract
  • Do not combine with: vitamin C and benzoyl peroxide

Can I use them at the same time?

Most of the time, you can mix them. But sometimes they will cause a double exfoliation and cause sensitivity; so make sure you choose lower concentrations and check with a professional beforehand to avoid any side effects. On some occasions, you cannot use them simultaneously, but you will be able to alternate days with the products.
