Eczema Triggers: How Does the Weather Affect Skin?

The changing of the seasons brings a whole lot to look.

Forward to—new fashions to wear, new holidays to enjoy and new views to take in. For those who suffer from eczema, though, changing weather could be a source of frustration; in addition to stress, skin irritants, infections and indoor allergens, the weather itself can trigger eczema breakouts. A few tweaks to your skin care regimen and day-to-day routine help keep your skin clear so you can focus on the things that matter, whether it’s a summer shower or fresh winter snow.

Why Weather?

When spring and summer roll around, hot weather naturally leads to sweating, and sweating can cause flare-ups of atopic eczema, the most common variety of the condition. You might notice a prickly feeling when you sweat, indicating an oncoming breakout. The winter season encourages another key culprit of eczema: dry skin. Eczema-prone skin has trouble staying moist and flexible, which leads to the brittle and scaly texture that characterizes breakouts; dry winter weather heightens this issue.

Summertime Strategies

As is the case in any weather, a regular moisturizing routine is key to eczema control. In hot temps, turn to non-greasy topical moisturizers such as a lotion rather than a thick cream. Rather than using a harsh, antibacterial soap to wash away sweat—which might kill useful bacteria and make way for breakouts—use a gentle moisturizing soap. Reduce irritation with loose-fitting, soft and breathable fabrics such as cotton and keep your house cool with a fan or air conditioner, maintaining humidity levels of around 50 percent. Rinse in cool water after exposure to irritants such as chlorine, pollen, salt, sand or sweat to stave off eczema flares before they happen.

Coping in Cold Weather

In cold climates, use a fragrance-free moisturizing soap to stave off eczema irritation and moisturize twice daily.  Read more
